When it was initially founded in 1869, SBS bank was originally called Southland Building, Land and Investment Sociecty. Fast forward to somewhere around 1876, it was renamed to Southland Building and Investment Society and Bank of Deposit.

“ Upon the maturity of a term deposit, a SBS check was forwarded overseas where it could not be collected on. The cheque was misplaced for many years, however the original cheque was later found, but SBS would not honor the funds due to the time lapse, SBS never submitted the funds into the IRD Unclaimed Money, claiming the was no industry standard at the time. The NZ banking Ombudsman couldn’t assist as SBS was not at part of the Ombudsman Scheme when they were the Southland Building Society. SBS did not follow the law by turning over the last known address and contact information to Unclaimed Monies after six years.”
